Hey, nice to meet you!
Here you can learn all about us – who we are, who we were, and who we will be.
What’s in a name? For 1plusX, the answer is everything.
1 is the first action; the place where things begin. For us, this means the data we ingest from our clients
Plus is the special ingredient; the magic that happens once your data and our AI-intelligence get together
X represents the insights, the enhancement; the clarity from the chaos. Exactly what you get if you decide to work with us.
In the summer of 2007, while working in Google’s then-tiny Zurich office, Jürgen and Thomas met and became friends, sharing a passion for this crazy thing called AI. Career moves put them on two different paths – Jürgen to Swisscom and R&D; Thomas to ETH and academia. But their moves were beneficial. Jürgen quickly realized that European companies had access to rivers of data, but they were not using them to their full potential. Meanwhile Thomas was consolidating his position as a recognized expert on AI research and science.
Spurred on and supported by Stephanie and Joachim Schoss, Jürgen and Thomas started 1plusX. Mission: to help companies extract useful insights and achieve better marketing results through artificial intelligence. Simply, they wanted to help companies bring together the data from all digital touchpoints, enrich it with value-adding predictions and bring it to use for digital marketing. All together fast, sustainably and ona very large scale.
Early pitches exceeded all expectations. Media companies wanted better data tech for audience building, at a time when the industry was just starting to talk about what is now the current mantra: match the right message to the right user, through the right channel, at the right time.
In 2014, 1plusX was officially born.
Jürgen Galler, Thomas Hofmann, Joachim and Stephanie Schoss co-found 1plusX in Switzerland.

We believe that each relationship, whether with customers, partners or employees, is unique and should be treated as such. For each customer relationship, we create specific, tailored solutions - we don’t believe in a one-size-fits-all approach. We respond to your data needs so you can best respond to the needs of your customers.
Curiosity and an adventurous spirit drive us towards making bold decisions. We think one step ahead, anticipating industry trends and future customer needs. A successful data-driven strategy provides accuracy, but requires creativity to build.
We know that reaching ambitious goals is possible, even if it means disrupting an industry that is constantly changing. Our mindset ensures we always keep the bigger picture in mind and don’t get fazed by small obstacles because they are a part of every successful journey. Our approach is pragmatic and hands-on – no matter how complex a challenge might be.
We are fun, smart people with purpose genuinely interested in everyone who works with us. With our start-up mindset, we strive to be successful together, sharing victories, helping each other and advancing towards a common goal. This makes work life better, and also life better in general.
The date we founded in Switzerland. We’ve grown a whole lot since then. But we stay true to our roots of being precise and reliable.
That’s the number of countries our clients come from. Our team stays close, no matter where we are in the world.
That’s how much information our AI is able to process. Each day.
Cumulated years of experience of our leadership team, in engineering, product development, media and digital business.
Those are our founders. But many members of our team cut their teeth in a disruptive tech giant.
That’s how often our software is updated each year, without compromising our customers’ operations.
The ???? ???? ???? ???? and ???????? emojis populate our internal conversations and are an integral part of our-day-to-day language.
That’s the speed at which 1plusX’s AI is able to predict gender and age variables of a property’s first-time visitors.
Taught by European clients in the publishing industry about what works and what doesn’t, we’re now mature enough for a business road trip across the U.S. and Asia. With new funding from January 2021, 1plusX is now restructuring operations and hiring before the big move.
Once a small group of data enthusiasts, now an international team of data explorers.
Jürgen has a passion for entrepreneurship, digital marketing and artificial intelligence, and brought all those obsessions together when he co-founded 1plusX.
His background is blue-chip digital business management; roles he has rocked in both Europe and Japan. A long stint at Google saw him heading up the development of Google Search, Chrome and YouTube’s EMEA products. After that, he was the strategy mastermind at Swisscom.
Jürgen’s superpower is getting digital products off the ground. But he couldn’t live without his kids, his collection of Japanese knives, or his Vespa.
Thomas is Professor of Computer Science at ETH Zurich, co-Director of the Max-Planck ETH Center for Learning Systems, and Head of the Data Analytics Group. He has published more than 90 peer-reviewed papers and along with Jurgen is the co-founder of 1plusX.
His list of past employers reads like a who’s who of AI mastery, including Google, MIT, UC Berkeley, Brown University, Fraunhofer, and ETH. He’s also a startup veteran, having founded one of the first successful AI companies, Recommind.
Thomas is the human mind behind our AI brain. He spends a lot of time thinking about mathematics and philosophy, mostly on long runs through the beautiful Swiss mountains.
Joachim is a business angel, advisory board member, lecturer and serial entrepreneur with a formidable track record. He founded one of Europe’s most successful online businesses, Scout 24, and co-founded other startups in the fields of fintech, proptech, real estate and big data. He has won numerous accolades including “Business Angel of the Year” and “Top Ten Founders of the Decade.”
A near-fatal accident in 2002 brought Joachim to his other passion – philanthropy. He founded the charitable foundations ReState, MyHandicap and EnableMe, and initiated the Center for Disability and Integration at the University St. Gallen which publishes research on disability inclusion.
Stephanie’s career centers on making high-performance teams work. She’s a Director of the HSG Executive School of Management, Technology and Law at the University of St. Gallen and a founding Director of the Competence Center for Top Team Research at the HSG Institute of International Management. Her research focuses on team personality, leadership and the effects of conflicts, empathy, and “we-consciousness” in teams.
Alongside her academic work, Stephanie is an active entrepreneur – chairing a business psychology company as well as an international top manager's community. She is happily married to Joachim and together they manage their patchwork family “SME" of seven children.

During his 18-year career, Fabian has led many high-performing teams of software engineers, AI specialists and cloud engineers for SaaS products. He holds three – yes, three – Master’s degrees in Computer Science, Artificial Intelligence, and Management of Technology. He’s also a passionate paragliding pilot and the proud father of two young boys.
Carolin shapes the strategic success vision of 1plusX. She’s responsible for driving long-term customer relationships and revenue growth through retention, expansion and satisfaction. Before joining 1plusX, Carolin was Head of Data Products at the leading digital publishing house, Axel Springer. That’s where she first came into contact with the 1plusX platform, on the client side, and was so impressed she jumped ship and came to work for us! Outside of work, Carolin enjoys family time with her little Jaron. Her passions include cooking, singing and charity activities. She’s a frequent speaker at industry seminars and conferences all around Europe.
Marco has been working in the areas of Ad Technologies and Publisher Services for over 20 years now, and comes to us from DQ&A, Lycos Europe, FreeWheel and Comcast International, where he was the managing director.
